Dami Im is the winner of The X Factor Australia 2013. The South Korean-born young woman is known for her phenomenal winning. Australian audiences were stunned by the contrast between what she was previously presented as a shy and awkward contender in the audition and boot camp, which is then transformed into a 'monster' in the live shows. Dami has devoured all genres of music offered to her to deliver on the stage with a very slick; ranging from ballads, disco, pop, to rock --after she was kicked out from the competition because she messed up a song in her most important performance due to continuous battling against nerve and self-distrust. A viewer on Youtube had commented: "I would really call her a ‘Monster’, if only she could rap”. All of her success was backed up by a powerful vocal that she has. What Dami did, has never been done globally: five standing ovations in a row from all of the judges, eight in total out of ten live shows.

Dami moved to Australia at the age of 9. The 25-year-old singer had never been recognized as of prominent talent in singing during the school day. All people knew about her is that she was quite talented in music. Dami took music as her discipline and graduated from University of Queensland with The First Class Honours in a Bachelor of Music. Dami has excellent piano skills, as well as violin. As to music genres before X Factor, Dami had more contact with Classic and Jazz.

Dami’s victory in the X Factor Australia 2013 is quite phenomenal. She shone since the beginning of the show. In fact, she was not among the favored. Although viewers have recognized the beauty of her voice on the audition, however, people would not have expected much from such a shy and awkward singer. Borrowing a phrase from a senior fan, Dami’s journey in The X Factor is more like 'The Ugly Duckling' story: someone who was underestimated, then turn out into a figure that is so endearing and admired by many people. Dami also still want to be and look like herself that she keeps down to earth and refuses plastic surgery to look super cute or to boost her career like most Korean artists.

Another side of Dami that makes her fans love him so much is refreshing demeanor, coupled with a humble personality and friendly. She always identifies herself as a 'not cool, daggy, looser'. Despite the fame that now she has today, the impression of innocence is still alive in her. Oddly said, that is the thing that makes the fans admire her more and more. A site named www.theguardian.com known for their sour criticism against talent shows calls Dami as 'deserving winner' and ‘the least annoying’ talent show contestant. People also love Dami because of her social sense. Since graduating high school and making money for herself by teaching music, Dami had started sponsoring children in need from India, and today also from Africa; supporting their life and education.

Dami Im, apart from any territorial restrictions which may take time for her to actually reach her international stardom --although she already got what it takes-- seems to have become an artist with a character that can be universally accepted by all people. Hence, it is not surprising that the composition of Dami’s fans is somewhat unique; ranging from children, teens, adult women (read: mothers, usually plus their husbands), and adult males of course. However, it is a little bit strange that so many Dami Army are women.

It might have crossed on your mind that people's admiration for Dami is no more than a mere momentary euphoria and cliché they normally react to talent shows like we have been used to see. Well, there is one more fact in regard with the composition of Dami Army that may answer your doubts about the capacity of her musicality; some Dami’s page followers on Facebook are elderly people who have come into contact with music from various genres and generations. Not to mention some of them are music teachers and lecturers. One of them even wrote a pretty in-depth analysis on a blog about what is so special about Dami’s appearance in the first week when she belted out U2’s song ‘One’.

In addition to Australia, Dami’s fan base has today spread out over several countries where some of her songs have been played there, such as Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Argentina, Brazil, USA, Canada, India, and will follow other countries.
